Provides a detailed view of the relationship between diet, nutrition and disease. The course will cover the methodology used to determine dietary, nutritional and health status and how evidence is gathered to determine the links between diet, nutrition and health. The relationship between diet and nutrition and the prevention and management of specific diseases and conditions such as cardiovascular disease, cancer, diabetes, obesity, gastrointestinal disorders and osteoporosis will be covered in depth.

ObjectivesOn successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

1. apply dietary, energy and physical assessment methodologies
2. understand how evidence for the relationship between diet, nutrition and disease is obtained
3. understand the role of genetics in diet-related diseases and disease susceptibility
4. understand the relationship of diet and nutrition to specific diseases
5. apply their knowledge and understanding of the principles of nutrition to the prevention and treatment of specific diseases
