PhD Opportunities in Rock Mechanics (Two Positions Available)

We are seeking applications from two outstanding domestic PhD candidates to join our research group in the field of rock mechanics. Our team has recently developed a novel approach for predicting the shear strength of large in situ rock discontinuities, known as StADSS. This method combines a semi-analytical shear strength model with a random field model and has been successfully validated through laboratory testing and field applications. Current developments assume perfectly matched and persistent discontinuities, providing an exciting platform for further research.

PhD Project 1: Non-Persistent Discontinuities and Rock Bridges

This project will investigate the influence of discontinuity non-persistence and the contribution of rock bridges to rock mass stability. The research will be primarily numerical, involving advanced modelling and analysis techniques.

PhD Project 2: Water Flow, Discontinuity Mismatching and Shear Strength

This project will examine fluid flow through rock discontinuities and the effects of discontinuity mismatching on shear strength. The research will combine experimental investigations with numerical modelling.

Applicants should possess an excellent academic record, preferably including a master's degree with a research component. Experience in experimental and/or numerical methods, together with strong written communication and presentation skills, is highly desirable.
