Closing Date: 30 June 2025 Apply Now
PhD Scholarship
The successful candidate will work with our ironmaking research team at the BHP Centre for Sustainable Steelmaking Research (SSR). This project aims to experimentally investigate the impact of future low greenhouse gas emission blast furnace conditions on raw material behaviour.
The BHP Centre for Sustainable Steelmaking Research (SSR) is inviting applications for an PhD position in ironmaking. We are seeking a highly motivated and talented individual to join our research team and contribute to our ongoing projects in ironmaking technology.
This project offers a unique opportunity to advance the understanding of the reduction, softening and melting of ferrous materials in a hydrogen enriched top gas recycling blast furnace.
The study will employ a lab-scale softening and melting test apparatus at the University of Newcastle to examine the impact of complex gas conditions on the behaviour of lump, sinter, pellet and mixed burdens.
Requirements
- Master's degree or equivalent degree in Chemical/Mechanical/Metallurgical Engineering or a related discipline
- Extensive lab experience is required, especially with high temperature metallurgical experiments
- Knowledge of iron and steelmaking is desirable
- Strong data analysis skills in Excel and FactSage
- Excellent written and oral communication skills in English
- Ability to work independently as well as in a team
- Holding an appropriate visa to study in Australia
