Development of Sustainable Eating Quiz

Closing Date: 31 August 2025 Apply Now

PhD Scholarship

We invite applicants for a funded PhD that will aim to create a fully functional and commercially viable online Sustainable Eating Quiz.

The food system generates about 35% of total global man-made greenhouse gas emissions.

Consumer food behaviour – what we eat and how much we waste plays a critical role. (e.g., in Australia, the biggest proportion of food waste is produced at the household level).

To reach global targets we need to understand how our food behaviour impacts measures of sustainability.

Consumers are interested in the impact of their own diet and how they can make improvements, but there currently is no simple evidence-based assessment tool that provides consumers with a sustainability score and personalised feedback on how improve their diet and behaviour.

This PhD project will aim to create such an assessment tool, available to the public, where consumers can test their impact and based on their results, will receive feedback on how to make the most impactful changes. The ‘Sustainable Eating Survey’ might also be adapted to fit industry needs and create collaborations (e.g. the Hunter wine industry).

The PhD student will undertake: a literature review of current available surveys and their properties and validity, develop the evidence-based assessment tool and test its validity and reliability and lastly, use the survey to do further studies on sustainable consumer behaviour.
