An In-Built Depolymerisation Solution for Polyethylene Waste

PhD Scholarship
This project aims to design polymer coated enzymes that can be embedded into polyethylene, and later activated by the elevated temperatures of a compost heap, to depolymerise the plastic to small molecules.
In this project we will embed the enzyme ‘manganese peroxidase’ into polyethylene films, using poly(olefin-block-acrylate) copolymers to encapsulate the enzyme and interface between enzyme and bulk polyethylene. Using high throughput polymer screening and 2D-NMR techniques that we developed, we will tune the copolymer design to
- provide thermal stability to the enzyme, and
- direct a bias in the enzyme towards processive depolymerisation from the polymer chain end over random chain scission. Once embedded in PE, our enzymes should enable decomposition of the plastic to small molecules (such as CO2 and short chain alcohols / aldehydes) on demand, without formation of harmful microplastics.
The project involves both polymer chemistry and detailed physical characterisation of polymer-protein interactions. The team consists of researchers both at UoN (Chapman & Wanless) and in the USA at Miami University (Konkolewicz), and will provide good opportunities for travel.
