Establishment

The University of Newcastle Academic High Performers Scholarship Program recognises the exceptional achievements and outstanding dedication of the high achieving applicants, across a range of cohorts, who are commencing their first undergraduate degree with University of Newcastle.

The Regional High School Dux Scholarships are awarded to students who are recognised as Dux by their regional or remote high school in the year prior to university study.

If you are Dux of your high school and have received the Vice-Chancellor's Year 12 Award for Academic Excellence, you are still welcome to apply for this scholarship.

Eligibility

To be eligible to apply for this scholarship, you will need to:

  • Be commencing in any undergraduate degree with University of Newcastle.
  • Be a Year 12 School Leaver, having completed secondary school in the year prior to commencing your degree.
  • Be intending to study on a full-time basis (minimum 60 units per year).
  • Have achieved an Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) or equivalent interstate senior secondary admission rank of 95.00 or higher, not including adjustment factors.
  • Have been recognised as Dux by your regional or remote High School in the year prior to commencing university study.
  • Be relocating from a regional area outside of the Hunter and Central Coast.
  • Not have previously received this scholarship.
  • Not hold a concurrent scholarship of equal or higher annual value.

Required Documentation

Required documents will be listed on the ‘Your Documents’ page of your application. The application portal accepts PDF only. A maximum of 3 PDF smaller than 5 MB can be added per document type upload field.

  • A personal statement (approx. 1 A4 page) outlining your academic achievements, career aspirations in the relevant area of study, and how this scholarship would assist you. This statement will cover all scholarships you are submitting for.

Provide proof you were awarded Dux or top Year 12 student, such as a certificate or letter. If unavailable when applying, declare this and agree to provide evidence before scholarship payment.


Benefit

The scholarship provides a total benefit of $30,000 to $50,000 depending on the standard fulltime duration of your program.

The scholarship will be paid as $5000 each semester, paid after the relevant census dates with payment usually finalised in April and September.


Selection

Applications for this scholarship must be submitted along with the required supporting documents and/or declaration online by the advertised application close date.

Selection will preference students residing in the University of Newcastle’s designated regions. Where applicants are equally ranked, preference may be given to applicants whose relocation is from a greater distance.

Scholarship offers may be conditional on later provision of evidence of the DUX Award.
