Chalk & Behrendt is a profit-for-purpose legal practice which serves clients throughout Australia. For over 25 years, we have focused on meeting the needs of Indigenous Australians and their organisations in areas that include land rights, native title, cultural heritage, agreement-making, environmental and planning law, administrative law, business formation, governance and compliance, policy development, conflict management and dispute resolution. We have established this scholarship because we are passionate about supporting the next generation of Indigenous lawyers.
Applicable to Indigenous students, Law, Bachelor of Laws, Juris Doctor, part-time and full-time study.
Eligibility
To be eligible to apply for this scholarship, you will need to:
- Be enrolled in 2nd year of a Bachelor of Laws (Honours) Combined program or 2nd year of the Juris Doctor at the University of Newcastle.
- Be enrolled on a part-time or full-time basis if studying a Bachelor of Laws (Honours) combined program.
- Demonstrate a minimum academic standard of a Grade Point Average (GPA) of 4.0 or higher. Please note, you do not need to provide evidence of this as we will use University reporting.
- Establish your Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander status per the process outlined on the Wollotuka Institute's study with us page.
- Not be the recipient of another University of Newcastle donor-funded or sponsored scholarship concurrently.
Required Documentation
Required documents will be listed on the ‘Your Documents’ page of your application. The application portal accepts PDF only. A maximum of 3 PDF smaller than 5 MB can be added per document type upload field.
- A personal statement (approx. 1 A4 page) outlining your academic achievements, career aspirations in the relevant area of study, and how this scholarship would assist you. This statement will cover all scholarships you are submitting for.
Benefit
This scholarship provides a total maximum benefit of $30,000. Students enrolled full-time (30-40 units a semester) will be paid at a rate of $3,750 per semester up to a maximum of 4 years for Bachelor of Laws (Honours) combined programs or up to a maximum of 2 years for Juris Doctor programs. Students enrolled part-time (10-20 units a semester) in a Bachelor of Laws (Honours) combined program will be paid at a rate of $1,875 per semester, up to a maximum of $30,000 (total scholarship value).
Payments are typically received 2–3 weeks after the census date, or 2–3 weeks after you accept your offer if the census date has already passed.
Selection
Selection is a competitive process and will be based on assessment of the scholarship application and any required supporting documents, with reference to the eligibility criteria.
Selection will be made by the Indigenous Selection Panel which will consist of a minimum of three members chosen by the Pro Vice-Chancellor Indigenous Strategy and Leadership.
