Thomas Brewer Shaping Scholarship in Medicine

The Thomas Brewer Shaping Scholarship in Medicine was established by Margaret Brewer to support disadvantaged students studying medicine at the University of Newcastle. The named scholarship is in memory of Margaret’s husband Thomas Alan Brewer and his ancestors. It is the intent of these scholarships that they be used to assist disadvantaged students with their studies at the University of Newcastle.
To be eligible to apply for this scholarship you must meet the following criteria:
- Be enrolled in 1st year of the Bachelor of Medical Science/Doctor of Medicine (Joint Medical Program) with University of Newcastle.
- Be enrolled full-time.
- Demonstrate impact of personal circumstances, such as carer, sole parent, financial hardship, English language difficulty, Indigenous Australian, long term medical condition or effects of abuse, disability, refugee status, regional/remote disadvantage.
- Not be the recipient of another University of Newcastle donor-funded or sponsored scholarship concurrently.

The scholarship provides a total, maximum benefit of up to $20,000 over the full 5 year tenure.
The benefit will be paid as $4,000 each year - $2,000 each semester after the relevant census dates (usually in April and September).
Selection is a competitive process and will be based on assessment of the scholarship application and any required supporting documents, with reference to the eligibility criteria.
