This scholarship was established in 1994 to support students with demonstrated sporting ability and potential, and encourage their contribution to the sporting achievements of the university. The purpose of this scholarship is to improve the quality of our sporting teams, raise the university’s profile through sport, and establish a standard of excellence to complement our academic achievements.
Students are able to represent the university in a wide range of sports as members of sporting clubs or at inter-university competitions. Student participation in sport is facilitated by the broad range of sporting facilities which are among the best in the region.
It is the intention of this scholarship that the successful recipient will be active on campus and/or participate in inter-university competitions, representing the university at local, district, and national levels in their chosen sport.

Applicable to sports, athletes, enabling (Open Foundation or Yapug), undergraduate, domestic and international students, part-time students.
Eligibility
To be eligible to apply for this scholarship, you will need to:
- Be enrolled in any year of an undergraduate degree or enabling program at the University of Newcastle.
- In the scholarship award year, be a member of, and play with a University of Newcastle sporting team or represent the University in an individual or team sport.
- Have attained an equivalent sporting standard in the previous 2 years of selection at district representative level in the sport for an Under 17 or older age district team as a minimum.
- Must not be a Professional Sports Person.
- Demonstrate academic progress by the Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) or equivalent required for entry for commencing students, or a Grade Point Average (GPA) of 4.0 for continuing students (evidence not required for current UON students).
- Demonstrate the impact of educational disadvantage such as carer and sole parent responsibilities, financial hardship, a long-term medical condition or disability, the ongoing effects of abuse, regional/remote disadvantage, or applicant attributes such as being an Indigenous Australian, having a Refugee background, or placement with an Out-of-Home Care provider.
- Not have previously received this scholarship.
- This scholarship is open to both full-time and part-time students.
- This scholarship is open to both domestic (Australian/New Zealand citizens or Australian permanent residents) and international students.
Required Documentation
Required documents will be listed on the ‘Your Documents’ page of your application. The application portal accepts PDF only. A maximum of 3 PDF smaller than 5 MB can be added per document type upload field.
- A personal statement (approx. 1 A4 page) outlining your academic achievements, career aspirations in the relevant area of study, and how this scholarship would assist you. This statement will cover all scholarships you are submitting for.
- You may be required to provide documents to support your educational challenges and personal circumstances. These will be identified when you apply based on your individual application responses.
- Evidence of selection in a representative team or participation in a highlight event, including web links to details of selection and participation, published articles and results. You can also include your cv, club memberships etc.
- A written reference which can confirm your sporting achievements, including selection for and participation in highlight events if applicable.
Benefit
This scholarship provides a total benefit of $5,000 paid as a lump sum.
Payments are typically received 2–3 weeks after the semester census date, or 2–3 weeks after you accept your offer if the census date has already passed.
Selection
Selection is a competitive process and will be based on assessment of the scholarship application and any required supporting documents.
Scholarships will be awarded on the basis of demonstrated sporting ability, academic merit and commitment to the sporting achievements of the University.
