Social Production of Mental Health seminar series

The Social Production of Mental Health seminar series connects researchers interested in social, cultural and critical perspectives to mental health in Australia, Aotearoa and nearby.

The series is co-hosted by Natalie Hendry (Melbourne Graduate School of Education, University of Melbourne) and Effie Karageorgos (School of Humanities, Creative Industries and Social Science, University of Newcastle) with support of the Future of Madness Network, University of Newcastle.

We invite scholars and advocates across a diverse range of research areas to present new ideas, work in progress and research findings. This might include lived experiences of mental health; the relation between mental health and its social and cultural contexts; inequalities and injustice in mental health; theories of mental health and madness; alternative approaches to the ‘mental health crisis’; social and ethical issues in mental health care; and the politics of mental health. We welcome researchers from a broad range of disciplines and approaches including activist groups and studies, sociology, history, anthropology, philosophy, media studies, psychology, psychiatry, policy analysis, media studies, critical public health and other disciplinary fields.

This year we invite you to present either:

  • 15-20 min about your in-progress or completed research
  • 5-8 min short intro or provocation about new or emerging ideas or research

We hope this gives researchers a chance to present work in progress to generate discussion and new collaborations. Presenters do not need to prepare formal presentations or slides unless they would prefer to. All seminars are hosted on Zoom at approximately 1pm AEST, starting in May.

We will initially organise the first three seminars and then send out a second call for papers in June or July.

If you would like to present, please email either of us a short abstract for presentation proposals or a few sentences for introductions/provocations, as well as any information (e.g. social media links, project links, blog posts) that you would like to share with the group.

If you would like to participate and be invited to the seminars, please email Natalie or Effie to be added to the list and receive the Zoom links.
