Career Summary

Biography

Eleanor Majellano is a postdoctoral research fellow within the Centre of Excellence in Treatable Traits, University of Newcastle. Eleanor has over 6 years of doctoral and postdoctoral experience in undertaking clinical airway disease research studies.

Eleanor holds a degree in Optometry with honours and was awarded Outstanding Optometry Graduate of the Year. She was awarded an Endeavour Postgraduate Scholarship, an Australian government global competitive scholarship, to undertake a Master of Public Health at Curtin University, Perth, Western Australia. In 2017 , Eleanor was awarded an Australian Research Training (RTP) and NHMRC Centre of Excellence in Severe Asthma, a government-funded scholarship to undertake a PhD in Nursing at the University of Newcastle.

Eleanor's skill set encompasses a range of quantitative and qualitative research methods, including cross-sectional studies, focus groups, surveys, interviews, observations, nominal group technique, James Lind Alliance priority-setting partnerships, systematic review, thematic and content analysis, and developing patient-reported outcome measures. Eleanor's broad research includes understanding patient-, caregiver-, and healthcare professional perspectives to determine a personalised  model of care within the obstructive airway population. Her research also draws on theory and practice from social science to deliver theoretically informed insight into the meanings, context, and complexity of health and healthcare needs unique to people with airway disease.

Background Whilst multidimensional assessment enables the detection of treatable traits in severe asthma and has the potential to improve patient outcomes, healthcare disparities exist, and little is known about the factors influencing optimal management in severe asthma. This study aimed to explore perceived barriers, and enablers to implementing personalised care in severe asthma, from the healthcare professionalsÂż perspective. Methods A descriptive, qualitative study involving a single focus group (n = 7) and semi-structured interviews (n = 33) with multidisciplinary healthcare professionals involved in severe asthma care was conducted. A hybrid thematic and content analysis was undertaken to identify themes, which were then deductively mapped to the Theoretical Domains Framework (TDF). Results Overall, three emergent themes were identified: (1) Barriers- (2) Enablers- to optimal management; (3) Desired model of care. Across all TDF domains, 6 constructs influenced development and implementation of optimal care: (1) belief about consequences, (2) environmental context and resources, (3) belief about capabilities, (4) social/professional role and identity, (5) goals and (6) knowledge. Conclusion Implementation of personalised care in severe asthma is complex and non-linear. The use of a theory-based approach effectively demonstrated how a variety of behaviours could be targeted to optimise and promote personalised care in different clinical setting.
