Unis collaborate to fast track NSW net zero goals

The NSW Government’s announcement of a Decarbonisation Innovation Hub is a step change in collaborative efforts to accelerate the achievement of net zero emissions. The Hub brings together a world-class consortium of collaborators, including NUW Alliance partner universities, the University of Newcastle, UNSW Sydney, Western Sydney University and the University of Wollongong, as well as the University of Technology Sydney, Charles Sturt University, the Department of Primary Industries and Climate-KIC.

The Hub will create and share knowledge, pilot new technologies, develop energy and climate policies, inform government programs, and solve current business challenges in emissions reduction. These actions will be pursued via three networks focussing on: Land and Primary Industries, Electricfiation and Energy Systems, and Powerfuels and Hydrogen.

Scientia Professor Deo Prasad, Decarbonisation Innovation Hub CEO said, “Science-led evidence-based approach is the way forward and the Hub and Networks have been co-designed with impact in mind. Our activities across the Hub will drive decarbonisation efforts that will deliver transformative change.”

Minister for Science, Innovation and Technology Alister Henskens said collaboration will underpin the project, which will help turn innovative ideas into new industries, jobs and prosperous outcomes.

“The recent Innovation and Productivity Scorecard proves that NSW is well placed to lead the nation when it comes to the net zero economy and this new Decarbonisation Hub will drive investment, jobs and economic growth,” Minister Henskens said.

Professor Andy Marks, CEO of the NUW Alliance said: “The NUW Alliance universities are deeply committed to initiatives that drive job creation and industry innovation in sustainability. This project and others are critical in bringing that commitment to life for our communities in the Hunter, the Illawarra, Greater Sydney and further afield.”

“The NSW Decarbonisation Innovation Hub is an unprecedented opportunity for the NUW Alliance and partners to work collaboratively to drive step changes in research development and commercialisation. It is about creating measurable social, commercial and economic impact.”

“The breadth and depth of this consortium is unparalleled in its capacity to drive decarbonisation through energy-related and climate-related research and innovation”, Professor Marks concluded.

About the NUW Alliance
The NUW Alliance comprises four leading Australian research-intensive universities – the University of Newcastle, UNSW, the University of Wollongong and Western Sydney University.

The NUW Alliance spans a geographic area home to more than 75% of NSW’s population and 25% of Australia’s. The size and scale of our Alliance has not been seen before in Australia – over 240,000 students plus 18,000 staff, working across 37 locations including 15 innovation hubs and driving $1.4 billion in industry and community partnered research.

The mission of the NUW Alliance is to seek out the big collaborations that make a difference, collaborations that unlock new value, impact and benefit for our communities across NSW.

The NUW Alliance pursues targeted impact of a scale and depth that cannot be achieved by a lone university in the interests of their collective communities across the Hunter, the Illawarra, Greater Sydney, NSW and the nation.  Achieving positive outcomes in the interests of community health, Indigenous Australians, women, sustainability and industry innovation.
The NUW Alliance is currently developing an innovative, human-centred Engineering program which would significantly build capacity in diverse cohorts and drive job growth, skills and innovation – training the engineers of the future.
