University’s bot-soccer team to impress crowd at CeBIT Expo 2014
Two-time world champions of the RoboCup tournament, the University of Newcastle is showcasing their latest generation of robotic soccer stars (NUbots) at the CeBIT Expo from 5-7 May 2014 at Sydney Olympic Park.
With
another world title on the horizon, the robot soccer team is a force to be
reckoned with and the University is well on its way to discovering the Robot
World Cup's (RoboCup) goal of producing a fully autonomous humanoid robot team
worthy to beat the world's best human soccer team by the year 2050.
At the event, the University will showcase the Darwin OP humanoid robots that they have been working on since 2012, which operate without any assistance from engineers and use optimal recognition to locate and move towards a ball and around a soccer field.
The University NUbot demonstration will be one of 500 exhibitions from leading businesses in technology and innovation from around the world at the Expo, which attracts a crowd of over 30,000 people each year.
The NUbots is an autonomous robotic soccer research program at the University competing each year in RoboCup, an International event that furthers the development of artificial intelligence.
The drivers behind the program are students undertaking both undergraduate and postgraduate degrees within the fields of computer science, software engineering, computer engineering, mathematics and statistics.
The students pull together to work on four key areas that allow a robot to play soccer, locomotion, behaviour, vision and localisation, and have produced outstanding results demonstrating contributions towards the fields of artificial intelligence, automation and how computers can be used to solve complex problems.
The University has distinguished itself in robotics and has participated in RoboCup since 2002, winning its first league in Germany in 2006 using robotic dogs and then in 2008 in China using a different model of humanoid robots manufactured in France.
