University of Newcastle graduate wins Surveyors Excellence Award

Wednesday, 13 November 2013

University of Newcastle Surveying graduate Matthew Gibbs is this years' winner of an Australian Consulting Surveyors NSW Excellence Award.

Matthew won for University Student Project of the Year and entered his final year project, entitled Comparison of Close Range Photogrammetry and Terrestrial Scanning for Detail Surveys, after completing his degree in 2012.

"My interest was sparked on this subject when my employer started looking towards scanning as a viable option for some of the more complex surveys that clients were after.

"Laser scanning is seen as an attractive alternative and can produce a survey in a couple of days that conventional surveying can only produce in weeks.

"The project was the most challenging part of my degree but it was also the highlight," Matthew said.

The recent Awards Evening was held at the Hilton Hotel in Sydney where Matthew was presented with his award.

"It never crossed my mind that I would receive an award for the project. It still didn't click on the night until I saw my name in the program.

"It's always a good feeling to get a positive response on something that you pledge a lot of time to."

This is the 16th year that a joint committee of the Institution of Surveyors NSW and the Association of Consulting Surveyors NSW have organised awards to recognise the excellent achievements of both individuals and organisations engaged in the surveying and spatial information industry across New South Wales.
