Enduring legacy for environmental protection
A scholarship to remember a friend and alumnus who dedicated his career to environmental conservation and lost his life in service, has been generously extended for ten more years by the NSW Government.
Established in 2015 in memory of alumnus the late Glen Turner, the scholarship supports gifted and disadvantaged students with their studies in environmental conservation. Mr Turner spent 14 years in public service, working to protect our precious natural environment. He was killed at work while investigating illegal land clearing in 2014.
“Glen Turner was tragically murdered simply doing his job and his loss continues to be felt deeply across NSW Government agencies,” says NSW Minister for the Environment, Penny Sharpe. “My hope is that Glen’s memory and work will continue to inspire students to pursue academic studies and careers in environmental protection.”
Honouring Glen by supporting others
The Glen Turner Scholarship has already helped five students to complete their degrees and pursue thriving careers in environmental conservation. Over the next decade, another 10 students will benefit, relieving some of their financial pressures and allowing them to focus on their studies.
Curtis Hayne received the Glen Turner Scholarship in 2022. He now works in remote sensing and landscape science with the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water.
Coming from a public school in a regional area, receiving the scholarship was great. I worked part-time while studying but the scholarship relieved financial pressure, allowing me to stay focused. It had a life-changing impact and gave me a chance to reach my full potential."
