Celebrating 50 years of Open Foundation
For 50 years, Open Foundation has been a beacon of hope and opportunity for people of the Hunter and Central Coast regions. The first pathway program in Australia, Open Foundation has enabled tens of thousands of students who don’t have the qualifications required for direct entry into university to begin their higher education journey, helping them to develop their skills, realise their dreams and achieve their goals.
Equity is at the core of our University’s values and this year’s celebrations are all about the people at the heart of our pathway programs. The success of our Open Foundation graduates over the past 50 years shows the impact higher education can have on communities and people’s lives.
“The Open Foundation program has not only provided pathways to university but has also become an integral part of the local community. The program is committed to supporting the educational aspirations of individuals in our region, both now and into the future,” says Associate Professor Anna Bennett, Director, Pathways and Academic Learning Support and alumna of the University.
Education has the power to change lives and our University believes everyone can thrive in the right environment. We thank our donors whose generous contributions over decades have helped to provide scholarships to support our pathways’ students.
Education opens doors, allows for critical thinking, and grants access to a better life. Undoubtedly, Open Foundation did this for me. My number one highlight was realising that I actually can and deserve to be in a university environment. It wasn’t easy, but getting through the challenges, asking for support, talking to lecturers, tutors and other students were also some of my key highlights."

More Joblink Plus scholarships announced
The strength of the partnership between Joblink Plus and the University of Newcastle has continued to grow with Joblink Plus doubling their current commitment to provide 25 scholarships annually for three years at a total value of $600,000 to support people to discover their purpose through education.
In collaboration with the University of Newcastle’s Pathways and Academic Learning Support Centre, Joblink Plus established scholarships to support and facilitate inclusive, broad and equitable access to university for people who may not otherwise have considered a tertiary education.
The Joblink Plus scholarships include specific commitments to assist students from rural and regional areas, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students and students who have experienced domestic and family violence. Several of the scholarships will also directly support students who are seeking to pursue higher education through our pathway programs.
"It’s important to recognise that scholarships represent more than just financial support. A scholarship represents food and housing, childcare and security. But it also shows people that someone believes in them, someone is backing them to succeed. Knowing you have someone in your corner is a powerful motivator.
While education can open many doors, for some students having the support of a scholarship is the only way they can walk through it. We are thrilled to help more people dream big and connect with the dignity and fulfillment made possible through education,” says Christine Shewry, CEO, Joblink Plus.
