The University of Newcastle community mourns the passing of The Hon John Price AM, a distinguished public servant, community leader and steadfast advocate for education whose association with the University and its predecessor institutions spanned more than three decades.
On behalf of the University Council and the broader University community, I extend our sincere condolences to John's family, friends and colleagues.
John's service to the University was extraordinary. His contribution began as a University Council Member of the Newcastle College of Advanced Education from 1981 to 1984, including service as Deputy Chairman from 1983 to 1984, before continuing through almost 30 years of leadership and service to the University of Newcastle. Over that time, he served in a range of capacities including Parliamentary Representative, Ministerial Appointee, External Member of Council, Deputy Chancellor and Acting Chancellor.
Throughout his long association with the University, John was recognised for his integrity, practical judgementand deep understanding of governance. He made significant contributions across many Council committees, particularly in the areas of finance, audit and risk management, helping to guide the University through periods of growth and transformation. His commitment extended beyond Council through his service as a Director of NUsport and through numerous committee appointments that supported the University's strategic development.
In recognition of his outstanding contribution to the University and the broader community, John was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Letters by the University of Newcastle in 2014. The award acknowledged both his exceptional service to the institution and his lifelong contribution to the Hunter region.
John brought to the University a strong belief in the transformative power of education and a genuine desire to create opportunities for future generations. His leadership was characterised by humility, diligence and an enduring commitment to the success of the University and the region it serves.
The University's history has been shaped by the contributions of many dedicated individuals, and John stands among those whose service leaves a lasting legacy. His counsel, friendship and commitment to the University will be remembered with gratitude and respect.
