From Classroom Theory to Curiosity in Action | Experiment Fest 2026
Curiosity, discovery and hands-on learning were at the heart of this year’s Experiment Fest, which welcomed almost 1,400 high school students from across the Hunter, Central Coast and beyond.
Led by the College of Engineering, Science and Environment, the annual initiative gives students a unique opportunity to learn from university academics and explore the scientific concepts that underpin their HSC studies. Through a range of interactive experiments and activities, students deepen their understanding of science while experiencing what it’s like to study and learn in a university environment.
Bringing Science to Life
Across two exciting weeks, Stage 6 students travelled from throughout the regions to take part in immersive laboratory experiences designed to support their HSC studies.
Through hands-on activities in Biology, Chemistry, Earth and Environmental Science, and Physics, students explored key scientific concepts through practical applications using specialist equipment, while gaining exposure to the facilities, equipment and techniques used in university teaching and research.
Exploring STEM beyond the classroom
Experiment Fest provides a unique opportunity for students to strengthen their scientific skills, ask questions of experts and see first-hand how STEM knowledge is applied to solve real-world challenges. For many attendees, it is also their first experience on a university campus, helping them envision future pathways into higher education and STEM careers.

rough hands-on activities, students experienced the diversity of STEM research, from extracting DNA from strawberries in Biology and analysing sports drinks using advanced Chemistry instrumentation, to investigating water quality and environmental management in Earth and Environmental Science, and exploring the laws of motion through projectile experiments in Physics. The practical, real-world nature of these activities resonated strongly with participants.
One student reflected, “I enjoyed the AAS Gatorade experiment as it was fun to use the equipment again and physically see the application of flame test and AAS lasers in real life. I also liked how the results were applicable to real-world scenarios. Additionally, I enjoyed the hydrolysis experiment because it was really interesting to see the real-world application and use of NMR and IR.”

As Experiment Fest enters its third decade, it continues to play an important role in nurturing the next generation of scientists, engineers and innovators. By bringing STEM to life through hands-on discovery and real-world application, the program helps young people build the confidence, curiosity and skills that will shape the future of our region and beyond.
