Contractor awarded for university’s 450-bed student accommodation at Callaghan Campus
The University of Newcastle has moved a step closer to delivering more affordable housing for students, appointing Hansen Yuncken as principal contractor for a new 450-bed accommodation development at Callaghan Campus.
The eight-storey building, designed to achieve a 5-star Green Star rating, will provide a mix of single studios and shared living clusters to suit different need and budgets.
University of Newcastle Vice-Chancellor Professor Alex Zelinsky AO said the project would deliver significant benefits for students.
“At a time when rental affordability is a real challenge, this development is about more than beds - it’s about providing safe, supportive and affordable living options so more students can fully participate in university life,” said Professor Zelinsky.
“We know that where students live can have a profound impact on their university experience. Our data shows that students who live on campus are more likely to stay engaged with their studies and achieve stronger academic outcomes.”
University of Newcastle data shows that students who live on campus are 10% more likely to remain in their studies (86.8% v 76.9%) and also more likely to pass their course load (89.8% vs 87.8%).

“The appointment of Hansen Yuncken as principal contractor marks a significant milestone in progressing this important project toward delivery,” said Professor Zelinsky.
The engagement of Hansen Yuncken, who are also delivering the Universty’s City Student Accommodation, follows the approval of the Regionally Significant Development Application in April 2026.
Designed by Lyons Architects, the new student accommodation is expected to open to students in Semester 2, 2028.
