Freedom of Speech and Academic Freedom
The draft Code for the Protection of Freedom of Speech and Academic Freedom has been developed by the University in response to a review initiated by the Federal Minister for Education.
The proposed Code is intended:
- to ensure that the freedom of lawful speech and academic freedom for staff and students of the University and visitors to the University are not restricted or unnecessarily burdened; and
- to affirm the importance of the University’s institutional autonomy under law in the regulation of its affairs, including the protection of freedom of speech and academic freedom.
The University is eager to consult with staff and students on the draft code. Attached is a discussion paper to support the consultation process and a copy of the draft Code for the Protection of Freedom of Speech and Academic Freedom.

Consultation will remain open until Monday 8 June 2020. Whilst this is an extended period for consultation we would welcome early feedback to inform our deliberations.
