February saw the launch of the Faculty of Business and Law Health Services Research and Innovation Group.

Three young University of Newcastle (UON) biologists have hand-built a state-of-the-art laser microscope at HMRI that delivers clear three-dimensional cellular images with unparalleled speed and precision.

Professor Billie Bonevski is a health behaviour scientist at UON, dedicated to improving health in the community. Billie’s research looks at why people engage in unhealthy behaviours, like smoking, drinking too much alcohol, not being physically active or eating unhealthily, and uses that information to design programs and advise the Government and other health organisations, on policies to empower people to be healthier.

Faced with a clinical paradox where obesity seemingly offers a protective effect for Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), Hunter researchers have performed a world-first pilot study aimed at achieving weight loss without exacerbating respiratory symptoms.

Hunter teachers are the focus of a new pilot health study being conducted by University of Newcastle (UON) physical activity researchers, targeting diabetes and mental health.
