UON elevates environment and sustainability education in Australia
A University of Newcastle initiated environment and sustainability teaching framework has received national acclaim at the 2015 Green Gown Awards held recently in Melbourne.
The UON led group, which included the Australian National University (ANU), Macquarie University, Flinders University and the University of New South Wales (UNSW) received the Award for Learning, Teaching & Skills, recognising their work in establishing a framework for the delivery of environment and sustainability education in Australia.
The framework aligns Australia with international best practice, representing a major advancement for Australian graduates working in environmental and sustainability fields.
As a result of this framework, Australia is now a leader internationally, extending beyond existing benchmarks such as the Framework for Higher Education Qualifications (UK), the Dublin Descriptors (EU), the revised Bloom's Taxonomy (2001) and Delor's Four Pillars of Education (1996).
Involving collaboration from industry, professional associations, government, indigenous groups, environmental/sustainability organisations, researchers, sustainability educators and students, the framework took twelve months to develop and involved more than 250 contributors providing over 2,500 pieces of advice.
