Chinese postgraduate student Ziying Wu found the University of Newcastle through online research and decided to study a Master of Business Administration (MBA) to expand her knowledge and enhance her career prospects.

She says, “The University of Newcastle is known for its high standards in education and research, which reassured me that I would have a valuable learning experience.”

“The University’s connection with Chinese entrepreneur Jack Ma also played a role in my decision to study here – Knowing that the University has ties with an influential figure in the business world, particularly in China, reinforced my belief that this institution is well-respected and has strong global networks.”

Before she had started her MBA, Ziying studied the University of Newcastle’s English Language Bridging Program (ELBP), where she completed the English for Academic Purposes (EAP) examination. This program has been designed to assist students with their writing, reading and listening skills.

“One of the benefits of studying the ELBP was the tailored focus on academic English, which had well-equipped me for the challenges of higher education.

“The program had a comprehensive approach that consisted of writing essays, giving presentations, and improving communication skills, which was invaluable for my transition into the MBA.”

Primarily studying the ELBP at the Callaghan campus, Ziying believes the environment and resources that she was equipped with contributed to her success and transition.

She says, “The Callaghan campus is well-equipped with modern classrooms, quiet study spaces, and a variety of resources to support learning.

The Auchmuty library, had a wide range of academic materials, comfortable spaces for group work and areas for quiet individual study. The availability of computers and access to online resources also made research and completing assignments much easier.”

Overall, Ziying believes that the ELBP was an instrumental part of allowing her to transition into life at Newcastle, all the while helping her prepare for her MBA.

“The ELBP program helped me strengthen my academic English skills, particularly in writing essays, conducting research, and delivering presentations, which are essential for success in higher education.”

Recently, Ziying was named a finalist in the 2024 NSW International Education Awards. She is one of only four students nominated for the "NSW International Student of the Year Award - English Language Intensive Courses for Overseas Students (ELICOS)."

She says, "The nomination process required me to reflect on my journey at the University of Newcastle and the contributions I made to the student community."

Once Ziying completes her studies, she aspires to work within the business sector as a Data Analyst.

She says, “By leveraging both my management background and the analytical skills that I am developing through my MBA, I aim to contribute to business decision-making, optimise processes, and provide insights that drive growth.”
