For self-confessed ‘foodie’ Peter Lee, the decision to study a Bachelor of Nutrition and Dietetics (Honours) was a chance to pursue two passions – food and wellness.

“I love food, so combining the knowledge while helping people is perfect,” says Peter.

Originally from Hong Kong, Peter was drawn to Newcastle for the beaches and relaxed lifestyle, as well as the University’s unrivalled pathways programs. He completed the Open Foundation program before beginning his degree.

Peter says the practical experience and industry connections he has made have been invaluable.

“Through workshops and placements I got to meet people from the same industry with a wide range of backgrounds. These experiences helped me gain a better understanding of the workforce, and which area I want to focus on.”

A particular highlight was the 10-week clinical placement Peter undertook at Belmont Hospital.

“I was a student dietitian who reviewed and provided suggestions on patients’ diet.

“The experience helped me to gain a better understanding of the industry and boost my confidence by having hands-on experience,” he says.

As an international student, Peter has some advice for those thinking of studying abroad at the University of Newcastle.

“Be brave and curious. Being overseas without family is not easy, but always remember you can make friends over here. The best way is to join a group that shares similar interest to you. For example – if you like dancing – join the UON dance group, sports teams etc.

“And make sure you join and follow the international students Facebook page to make new friends and exchange ideas,” he says.

Peter says for him, it’s all been worth it.

“During my degree I have built friendships, resilience and other skills such as interpersonal skills, team work and critical thinking that I can apply in my daily life and work,” he says.

Since graduating, Peter has been working casually as a Dietician, as well as a Program Assistant for the Careers and Employability Team at the University.

So what does the future hold?

“I hope to see myself grow in both maturity and in my career – and still able to be myself and do things that I love,” he says.
