A remarkable bequest to the University of Newcastle’s Conservatorium of Music continues to shape the future of music education and nurture the next generation of performers in our region.

Alumni and colleagues from GHD have clocked up tens of thousands of kilometres swimming, cycling and running together to raise funds for scholarships to support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students at the University of Newcastle.

Frances Doherty is proud to honour her father, Jack Doherty, whose activism to bring change for Indigenous students had an indelible impact on the University’s history. Nathan Towney, Pro Vice-Chancellor Indigenous Strategy and Leadership was the 2003 recipient of the Jack Doherty Undergraduate Scholarship for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Students.

Nik Ynez is the 2023 recipient of the Patricia Jensen Arts Scholarship, established from the estate of Patricia Jensen (nee Smith) to honour her love of literature and the arts. Thanks to ongoing support from a generous donor, the scholarship continues to encourage students to achieve their dreams through education.

With support from many generous donors to the 2023 LGBTQIA+ Shaping Futures Scholarship, Bachelor of Social Work (honours) student Luke is sharing his unique perspectives to help others.

The late Janice Leggett understood deeply the vital importance of nurses in our community. Her generous bequest is funding nursing scholarships and vital research into the treatment of alcohol use problems.
