University Chancellor, Mr Paul Jeans, will retire at the end of the year following more than 10 years at the helm of our University Council. He shares his reflections on the generosity of our community

Thanks to the incredible vision and generous support from the Steve Waugh Foundation, families from all over Australia caring for children with rare, chronic and complex health conditions have experienced the joy of lasting friendships, strong social support and greater family connection through the SNUG retreat program.

True crime may be one of the world’s most popular genres of entertainment but, for our students, the work to address injustice begins much closer to home, in the Justice Clinic at the University of Newcastle.

The nail-biting task of designing and launching their own glider has gripped thousands of high school students over the years as part of the Science and Engineering Challenge. This exhilarating activity has had a sustainable makeover thanks to a special partnership with Boeing.

Circle of connection: volunteers from out(fit), a not-for-profit organisation supported by the University of Newcastle, have teamed up with First Steps Count Child and Community Centre to build community connection with culture in Taree.

There is no power for change greater than a community discovering what it cares about. Two alumni volunteers helping to shape the future at the University of Newcastle are Alumni House Ambassador Conjoint Professor Kyle Loades and iLEAD Mentor Kylie Bridge.

To mark 40 years since they began in 1982, the Maitland Cancer Appeal Committee set their minds on another remarkable milestone – raising an incredible $400,000 for cancer research at the University.

As a cancer researcher initially focussed on blood cancers, alumnus Associate Professor Matt Dun’s research took an unexpected turn in 2018 when his daughter Josephine was diagnosed with diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma (DIPG).

In a journey spanning 3,700 kilometres and 60,000 years, thirteen of our 2020 Ma & Morley Scholars experienced an inspiring cultural immersion through north-west and central west NSW this year.

On Gifting Day, 9 March, our global community came together to make a collective impact through kindness. And what a day it was. Together we showed the extraordinary power of collective action – raising an incredible $323,118 in 24 hours.

Community support is building around Alumni House, with the exciting project attracting generous support from University of Newcastle alumni and community members who share the vision of connection and celebration.
