International students

Career-ready placements offer you the chance to experience the Australian workplace while earning credit towards your degree.

Please note that outside the University of Newcastle, career-ready placements may also be referred to as Work Integrated Learning (WIL). These terms mean the same thing, so whenever you see work integrated learning (WIL), it refers to career-ready placements.

Student Visa Holders

Placements as part of your degree: If you hold a Student Visa (Subclass 500), and are completing a placement that is part of your degree, any hours that make up your career-ready placement experience will not count towards your 48 hour per fortnight work cap.

Placements that are not part of your degree: If you hold a Student Visa (Subclass 500), and are completing a placement that is not a part of your degree, any hours of work-based placement or work experience will count towards your 48 hour per fortnight work cap during active study terms and reverts to unlimited work hours during study break periods.

To check the specific conditions of your visa and work limitations, use the Department of Home Affairs Visa Conditions Check Tool.

If you need assistance to understand your Visa Conditions and how to remain compliant, contact the International Student Support team by emailing internationalsupport@newcastle.edu.au.
