Description

ORHL2108 will build on the health promotion and preventative care themes established in PUBH1080, ORHL1102 and ORHL1105. The course will focus on aspects of health promotion and preventative care that are especially relevant to the oral health of Australian communities.In addition to examining the strategies used for oral health promotion in Australia, the Course will introduce the theories and approaches used in evaluating Oral Health Promotion projects. You will work with other students to plan and evaluate an oral health promotion project idea to present to your tutors and peers. In addition you will be introduced to research in population health which includes fundamental epidemiology and health statistics. You will complete a literature review and critical appraisal to support your evidence based practice and understanding of the literature.By the end of the course students will have gained experience in the design, development, implementation and evaluation of oral health promotion material.This course is a compulsory program component and students must pass in order to progress in the Bachelor of Oral Health Therapy. Students are unable to enrol in Year 3 clinical courses until they have passed this course.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of the course students will be able to:

1. describe the differences between health promotion and health education at both individual and population health levels

2. apply the principles of health promotion to plan and evaluate an oral health promotion project for a select target group

3. analyse and evaluate existing oral health promotion material in the context of ability to implement change

4. demonstrate an understanding of the strategies for a successful smoking cessation program

5. demonstrate an understanding of health statistics and research design

6. access and critically evaluate scientific literature and data

The topics to be covered include:

  • Oral Health promotion in Australia
  • Health Promotion planning and evaluation
  • Developing a research proposal and project planning
  • Health statistics and research design
  • Researching population health
  • Critical appraisal and review of health literature

Review of Progress

This course is a compulsory program requirement and is monitored for academic progress purposes. The course must be completed to progress in the program or meet other program requirements.

Failure or withdrawal from this course will result in students being considered under the Student Academic Progress Procedure.


Requisite

Students must be active in the Bachelor of Oral Health Therapy [12390] program, and be concurrently enrolled in or successfully completed PUBH1080 to enrol in this course. Students who have successfully completed ORHL2105 cannot enrol in this course.
