Description
ORHL2104 introduces students to the management of oral health therapy patients with a particular emphasis on dental occlusion and orthodontic patients. Clinical skills laboratory activities introduce new skills such as impression taking, pouring models, construction of mouthguards, clinical photography and placement and removal of orthodontic components and consolidation of previously learned skills.This course is a compulsory program component and students must pass in order to demonstrate clinical safety and to progress in the Bachelor of Oral Health Therapy program. Students are unable to enrol in Year 2 Semester 2 and Year 3 clinical courses until they have passed this course.

Learning outcomes
On successful completion of the course students will be able to:
1. Describe dental occlusion and malocclusion;
2. Describe contemporary orthodontic management of dental malocclusion;
3. Describe the elements of orthodontic therapy;
4. Discuss the role of the oral health therapist in the care of the orthodontic patient
5. Discuss the methods and materials used to take impressions and construct study models;
6. Demonstrate competency in taking impressions and construct study models
7. Demonstrate competency in the construction of mouthguards;
8. Demonstrate competency in the taking of clinical photographs;
9. Demonstrate competency in the Removal of orthodontic arch wires, bands and attachments;
10. Provide appropriate information and care for the orthodontic patient and community.
11. Describe and practice appropriate Infection Control and OH & S principles in the dental laboratory.

Review of Progress
This course is a compulsory program requirement and is monitored for academic progress purposes. The course must be completed to progress in the program or meet other program requirements.
Failure or withdrawal from this course will result in students being considered under the Student Academic Progress Procedure.
Requisite
This course is only available to students active in the B Oral Health Therapy (12390) program and have successfully completed ORHL1104, ORHL1105, HUBS1106 and HLSC1000.
Assumed knowledge
This course builds directly on, and requires that you have passed ORHL1104 and ORHL1105.
