Description
ORHL1106 will build on the material delivered in HUBS1401, ORHL1101 and HUBS1106 to help establish evidence-based clinical practice through highlighting aspects of the medical and dental sciences that directly influence oral health practice.
The course will provide an introduction to pharmacology, with a focus therapeutic agents that are commonly used in the dental clinic, as well as an introduction to pain management. Common systemic conditions, and their medications, particularly those that affect oral health and patient management, will be introduced. This will provide the foundation for medical history taking, and the management of patients with special medical needs. Genetic and developmental influences on health and disease will be examined, along with an introduction to orofacial developmental disorders.
By the end of the course students will have an understanding of the therapeutic management of oral and systemic disease, and the requirement to address the special medical needs of patients.
This course is a compulsory program component and students must pass in order to progress in the Bachelor of Oral Health Therapy. Students are unable to enroll in Year 2 clinical courses until they have passed this course.

Learning outcomes
On successful completion of the course students will be able to:
1. Demonstrate a knowledge and understanding of the basic concepts of pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics
2. Develop an understanding of the main therapeutic agents used in the dental clinic
3. Demonstrate a knowledge and understanding of the common approaches to pain management in the dental clinic
4. Develop an understanding of the common mechanisms underlying human oral and systemic diseases
5. Identify developmental abnormalities of the dental hard and soft tissues
Content
The topics to be covered include:
- Introduction to pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics
- Introduction to dental therapeutics, including antibiotic, antifungal and anti-inflammatory agents
- Pain management, and the use of analgesia and anaesthesia in the dental clinic
- Common systemic conditions, and their medications, that influence oral health and patient management
- Genetic influences on health and disease
- Introduction to orofacial and dental developmental abnormalities
Review of Progress
This course is a compulsory program requirement and is monitored for academic progress purposes. The course must be completed to progress in the program or meet other program requirements.
Failure or withdrawal from this course will result in students being considered under the Student Academic Progress Procedure.
Requisite
Students must be active in the Bachelor of Oral Health Therapy program [12390], and be concurrently enrolled in or successfully completed HUBS1106 to enrol in this course.
Students who have successfully completed ORHL1103 cannot enrol in this course.
