Description

Custodial Health is a complex area of healthcare delivered in a variety of custodial and corrective environments, underpinned by the principles of social justice.

During this Course you will explore  the principles of public health in the context of social justice in your context of practice locally and internationally and have the opportunity to develop knowledge and enhance your skills deliver  culturally safe, inclusive healthcare specific to minorities groups often found in custodial and/or corrective environments.

By establishing the custodial health clinician's potential for advocacy for minorities and disadvantage populations, consistent with the Sustainable Development Goals, you will have an increased awareness of the health professional's capacity to maintain, promote and improve the health and well-being of individuals and communities.

Further to this, the value of Emotional Intelligence and its impact on the practice and psychological well-being of the custodial health professional will be reflected upon and connected to safe clinical practice in the custodial environment.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of the course students will be able to:

1. Interpret and transmit knowledge, skills and ideas to non-specialist audiences regarding Social Justice as it relates to custodial healthcare

2. Analyse critically and reflect on the complex factors that influence criminogenic and anti-social behaviour

3. Analyse the concept of professional boundaries in the therapeutic relationship when working in custodial healthcare including the behaviours of the professional and the individual receiving care

4. Critically analyse the impact of community reintegration on health and well-being of the individual and their community on discharge from custody

5. Demonstrate an understanding of culturally safe, inclusive healthcare specific to minorities groups often found in custodial and/or corrective environments

6. Reflect on the value of Emotional Intelligence and its impact on the practice and psychological well-being of the custodial health professional, including its implications on the potential for professional dissonance, vicarious trauma, and grooming risk


Content

Module 1 Social Justice in custodial healthcare; delivering public health to minorities in detention  

  • Definition of Social justice as a continuum in healthcare generally and Custodial Health specifically
  • Diverse minority groups in detention
  • The principles of public health in the context of social justice in local and international custodial health care.

Module2:Pathologies of offending and the value of Community Reintegration

  • Anti-social behaviours including Offending behaviour, extreme self-harm
  • Community Reintegration: Health response to offending and its relationship with community safety  
  • Sustainable Development Goals – advocacy (direct and indirect) (virtual care, climate change and technology)

Module 3: Care of emotional wellbeing of the professional   

  • Professional boundaries and the therapeutic relationship in correctional healthcare
  • Advanced Communication and de-escalation communication, inclusive language
  • The impact of Emotional Intelligence and its implications on practice

Assumed knowledge

Foundations of health professional knowledge, legal and ethical issues, fundamentals of research, human bioscience, psychology, sociology related to practice. Principles of investigative approaches in health care, concepts, and theories relevant to practice, contemporary health care issues. Academic reading and writing skills, ability to access and evaluate information from a variety of sources, skills in critical analysis, critical judgment, synthesis, and evaluation. Ability to conceptualise practice.
