Description
The emergency nurse requires diverse knowledge to appropriately and effectively assess and manage patients in the emergency department. This course builds on the skills, knowledge and leadership of nurses in emergency department settings and includes development of expert, specialised cognitive and technical skills to prepare nurses for advance practice roles in the emergency department environment. By the end of the course students will have developed advanced practice skills to enhance the quality and safety of care for people within the emergency department and enhance their ability to influence care outcomes for these individuals and groups of patients, as well as their families.

Learning outcomes
On successful completion of the course students will be able to:
1. evaluate and integrate knowledge from nursing science and evidence-based practice to comprehensively assess and manage people in emergency department settings
2. demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of healthcare systems, emergency department settings and the role of the registered nurse to provide safe, efficient, effective and culturally appropriate care of people in emergency departments
3. critically evaluate emergency department models of care and demonstrate their application across contexts of care in emergency departments
4. evaluate theories of clinical leadership and identify strategies to develop your leadership within interdisciplinary teams in the emergency department context
5. plan future improvement within an emergency department context through the evaluation and development of a practice improvement program
Content
The topics to be covered include:
- Emergency Nursing and Clinical Excellence (Clinical excellence in emergency department, advanced level of understanding of pathophysiology of common emergency situations, primary and secondary health assessment in emergency and assessment frameworks, recognition of deterioration in the emergency department setting)
- Emergency healthcare systems and clinical governance (Understanding of primary, secondary and tertiary healthcare systems, clinical governance and safety culture, the National Safety and Quality Health Service accreditation standards, risk management principles and understanding of regulations, policies and procedures that govern practice in emergency department settings)
- Models of care in Emergency Nursing (Mastery and application of the Australian Triage Scale and its impacts on professional nursing practice, analysis of the evidence around models of care, evaluation of contemporary issues in emergency departments, for example staffing, emergency department overcrowding, interpersonal violence, drug and alcohol abuse, mental health emergencies, pandemics and epidemics)
- Emergency Nursing Clinical Leadership and the interdisciplinary team (theoretical frameworks underpinning leadership; contemporary socio-political, organisational, and professional issues confronting leadership, evaluate the impact nursing leadership has on patient outcomes and the healthcare team; enabling change and improving outcomes within emergency departments)
- Implementing evidence into Emergency Nursing practice (quality appraisal of research literature in emergency nursing, developing mastery for implementing evidence-based practices and undertaking policy review within the emergency department setting)
Assumed knowledge
Foundational nursing knowledge: nursing theory, legal and ethical issues, fundamentals of research, human bioscience, psychology, sociology related to practice. Academic reading and writing skills, ability to access and evaluate information from a variety of sources, skills in critical analysis, critical judgement, synthesis and evaluation.
