This course provides students with a review and elaboration of some of the key philosophical, ontological and epistemological issues that underlie thinking about design, communication and information technology research and research practices. Differing methodologies are examined in the context of the applications of these methods to design, communication, and information technology research. Emphasis is given to the application of specific research techniques and critiques of underlying theoretical assumptions as well as ethical considerations for research.

On successful completion of the course students will be able to:
1. The ability to select and administer appropriate methods for collecting and analysing production material and research data;
2. The application of research methods related to the disciplinary areas of design, communication, and information technology;
3. A development of critical and analytical skills;
4. Ethical standards appropriate to the field of study;
5. Skills in critiquing and appraising relevant literature.

This course is only available to students enrolled in the Bachelor of Information Technology (Honours) program.
- have completed the requirements for admission to the relevant Bachelor degree of the University, or to another cognate degree approved by the PVC;
- have completed, in that Bachelor degree, the requirements of an approved major in the discipline area, or in a cognate discipline area approved by the PVC, to be undertaken in the Honours program.
