Getting around campus at night
Its always great to be able to walk around campus with friends, but sometimes individual study needs mean you may have to walk alone. To ensure you feel safe getting around campus at night we have a number of suggestions:
- walk around using the identified Smart Paths
- catch the Security Shuttle Service to get you home at night
- call for a Safe Walk Service if you feel unsure
Smart Paths
As part of our Security Improvement Program, the University has identified a number of paths that are well trafficked with a combination of enhanced lighting, CCTV surveillance, wide paths and reduced vegetation. We’ve called these Smart Paths.
Smart Paths are clearly marked and patrolled at night by our Safety and Security team between 12pm – 12am seven days a week. This in addition to our normal campus patrols during the day. We encourage you choose these Smart Paths when walking around the campus.
You can find the Smart Paths map on the MyUni app. The app also allows you to see your location in real time to help you find the right paths along with the Security Help Points in case you need to contact security along the way.

Security Night Shuttle
Callaghan campus
From 6:30pm up until 1am you can call the security shuttle to arrange a pick up. The security night shuttle takes passengers to locations on-campus and also nearby suburbs including Jesmond, Shortland, Birmingham Gardens and Waratah West. For the after hours shuttle service you can arrange a pick-up by calling 4921 5888 and then pressing '3'. Click here to see the off-campus boundary map. Central Coast campus
A free security shuttle operates during the semester on the Central Coast campus Monday to Friday from 5pm to 10pm. The shuttle departs from the main bus stop on the Loop Road but will come to your location on request. The service also includes drop off and pick up to Ourimbah Railway Station by request. The shuttle does not operate on weekends, public holidays, University concession days or during semester breaks. To arrange a pick up with the security shuttle please call 4921 5888 and then press '3' or call 0414 411 799.
NUspace shuttle
The NUspace Shuttle service is a free inter-campus shuttle service that runs 5 days a week from 7am – 10.15pm. There are six stops on Callaghan campus and you can hop on and off wherever you like. The service then operates as a non- stop service to NUspace. The shuttle service runs during semester on a 30-minute frequency. During semester break the shuttle will change to a hourly service. The shuttle does not operate during the uni shutdown period or on public holidays. Please ensure you show the driver your student of staff ID when boarding the bus. Safe Walk Service
Our Safety and Security Services team provide an after dark safe walk service, which is available to all members of our university community. The escorted service is provided from building to building, building to vehicle, and vice versa within the boundaries of our Callaghan and Ourimbah campuses.
When receiving a call for this service, the Safety and Security Services team taking the request will make every possible attempt to have the safe walk service to your location as soon as possible. However, at times situations such as a heavy call load, medical emergencies or critical response requirements do arise that may delay the escort. Providing us with your call back number will enable us to contact you in the event of a delay.
This service if available to students and staff 24/7, 365 days a year but is subject to operational capacity and we recommend that you call us at least 15 minutes prior to your required time. For the Safe Walk Service you can email the team or call 4921 5888.
The Safe Walk Service only operates on-campus and does not extend to the campus surrounds.
