Office of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor
The Office of the Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Global Engagement and Partnerships) is responsible for the overall vision, strategic direction and priorities of Global Engagement and Partnerships Division.
The Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Vice President (Global Engagement and Partnerships), Professor Kevin Hall, provides strategic leadership in alumni engagement, community and global engagement, strategic partnerships, international student and global mobility and philanthropy across the university.
Office of Alumni and Philanthropy
The Office of Alumni and Philanthropy (OAP) facilitates the engagement of partners across business, industry, community organisations and local government to connect with UON through a range of key strategic alumni and philanthropic programs. With a key focus on these areas, OAP is committed to delivering the lead strategies of the Global Engagement and Partnerships Division.
With over 130,000 alumni in over 120 countries across the globe, the UON alumni community includes graduates of the University, academic and professional staff and past and present members of the University Council. OAP offers a number of platforms and programs to foster meaningful engagement between this global alumni community and the institution, its partners, industry, government, and a range of community organisations and stakeholders. It celebrates the success of the diverse achievers of our alumni network and connects them to communities across the world; making sure their stories are heard and recognising not only their achievements but the many ways in which they encapsulate the University’s defining values.
The Office of Alumni and Philanthropy also facilitates our alumni community, as well as industry and our partners, to contribute to the empowerment of others through philanthropic contributions. These contributions give opportunities for research and truly shape the futures of our students, giving them the best prospects for success whilst completing their studies at UON. Our donors reciprocate an investment in the importance of education and research to the world we are a part of and in turn enable the global leaders of tomorrow.

UON Global is responsible for delivering the university’s international aspirations and the lead strategies of the International and Advancement Division in achieving UON’s NeW Futures 2025 vision. The lead strategies include iLead Plus, Destination UON, Global Mobility and Employability and A Global Partner of Choice.
The UON student experience prepares our graduates to be true global citizens who are capable of improving the future of the next generation. Through iLead Plus, the student community at UoN develops skills in the areas of leadership, global mobility, social responsibility and employability. UON Global facilitates exchanges, internships, work integrated learning experiences, research experiences and study tours to enhance and support a unique and quality student experience at UON. These global preparedness programs and experiences ensure our students are ready to embark on their journey as UON graduates and make a difference.
UON Global works collaboratively with the Faculties and Divisions across the University as well as trusted partners in Australia and overseas to position UON as a lead study destination for students from across the globe. It facilitates and manages sustainable institutional collaborations and partnerships which enhance UON’s international engagement across the spectrum.

The Confucius Institute was established in 2011 as a partnership between The University of Newcastle (UON), Central China Normal University (Wuhan), and Hanban (Beijing). It is part of a wider global Confucius Institute Network within the education sector and plays a pivotal role in UON’s commitment to the China region.
The Institute is dedicated to developing a range of programs to enhance the awareness and understanding of Chinese language and culture. By working in close partnership with both local and international business, government, educational and community partners, the Institute strives to promote the cultural and economic links between the local Newcastle Region and China. It has a firm commitment to ensuring the local Newcastle and Central Coast regions are given the opportunity to acquire the language and cultural skills necessary in building prosperous relationships within China.
As part of UON’s International and Advancement Division, the Institute plays a major role in strengthening the university’s educational and cultural exchange with China. It is the leading provider in delivering top quality Chinese literacy programs within the local Newcastle and Central Coast region. Through the programs run by the Institute and the ongoing support of cultural awareness through key community-based events, the Institute is able to encourage and facilitate the learning of Chinese language and culture, achieving a more informed understanding of China, both across the Hunter and beyond.

UON China is The University of Newcastle’s (UON) official in-country representative office, located in the heart of Beijing’s central business district. The office co-locates with The Australia Chamber of Commerce (AustCham) in Beijing. It was officially opened by the Vice-Chancellor and President, Professor Caroline McMillen, on 30th April 2016.
The co-location of UON China with AustCham is a first for any Australian university and offers UON direct access to AustCham’s influential government, industry and business networks, giving UON a prominent presence in the Greater China region.
UON China aims to develop and consolidate constructive networks and professional connections with education partners, alumni, industry, schools, universities, business network and governments in China, all of which are pivotal to UON’s engagement, presence and success within China and in Newcastle.
UON China works in collaboration with Australian and globally based colleagues including stakeholders and partners across the Faculties and Divisions within the institution. UON China is an exciting and integral step in enabling the bold vision of the NeW Futures Strategic Plan.
