Access to information

What is GIPA?

GIPA is the acronym for Government Information (Public Access) which is underpinned by the Government Information (Public Access) Act 2009 (GIPA Act). The objective of the Act is to open government information to the public by:

  • encouraging and authorising the proactive public release of government information by agencies
  • giving members of the public an enforceable right to access government information
  • providing access to government information unless there is an overriding public interest against disclosure.

The Act sets out four pathways to accessing government information:

  • mandatory release of certain government information (view our open access information)
  • proactive release of government information
  • informal release of government information
  • formal access applications for information
