What can I study?

At the University of Newcastle we offer a range of exciting, contemporary academic programs at undergraduate, postgraduate and research level across our three colleges.

Entry requirements

Senior secondary school qualification

Admission to our undergraduate degree programs usually requires successful completion of a senior secondary school qualification similar to the Higher School Certificate (HSC), the highest educational award in New South Wales schools. To check if your qualification is recognised for direct entry into the University of Newcastle, please refer to the entry requirements below.

Post-secondary study

Further education like diplomas and university study can also be assessed for admission.

Additional requirements

Some of our programs have additional requirements like an audition, or portfolio.

We assess eligibility for our research programs on a case-by-case basis.

You generally need to hold an Australian honours degree with Class 1 or Class 2 division 1, or similar from another country. Additional postgraduate research training such as a Masters degree with a significant research component may also be considered.

We accept a number of assessable qualifications, including the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) and the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). The standard of English proficiency you need in these depends on your chosen program of study.

If you do not meet our English language requirements you can study at our Language Centre first.

Pathways to entry

For those who do not meet the academic requirement for direct entry The University of Newcastle College of International Education (UNCIE) offers direct pathways to our degrees in a supportive environment designed especially for international students.
