Grants & Schemes

The University of Newcastle and the Faculty of Health provide a number of support mechanisms for its research candidates.

Research Training Scheme (RTS)

The Research Training Scheme is a federally funding scheme distributed to Research Higher Degree candidates.  Currently the Faculty of Health provides $5000 per annum to full time, high cost program (laboratory based) candidates and $3000 per annum to full-time low cost program (non-laboratory based) candidates.  Part time candidates also receive funding at a pro-rata rate.  For further information and guidelines on usage of the Research Training Scheme (RTS) click here.

Grant-in-Aid

Each Semester the Faculty provides a Grant-in-Aid or 'write-up scholarship' of up to $5000 to assist candidates nearing their completion.  The funds can be used for any purpose that will support completion and submission of thesis by a designated time frame.  As the grant is dependant on donations and bequests, areas of research and eligibility can alter from year to year.

For further information contact Shirley Savy.

Scholarships

All research scholarships are administered through the Office of Graduate Studies.  For further information on available scholarships click here.

Laptop Scheme

From 2008 onwards, the University has provided all commencing RHD candidates with a standard laptop.  Commencing candidates must be enrolled and have a student card before a laptop can be issued.  Further information on the Scheme and eligibility can be found here.

Research Higher Degree Showcase

Each year the Faculty holds a 10 of the Best Research Showcase which highlights our best Research Higher candidates.  10 current candidates are selected to make an oral presentation in front of their peers and academics on their research findings.  A poster display competition is also an integral part of the Showcase.  Prizes are presented to the winner and runner up of the oral presentations and the winner of the best poster display.

This is a great opportunity for research students to hone their presentation skills and receive useful feedback.  In addition all RHD candidates are invited to attend the presentations, so they too can learn valuable skills and have the opportunity to see what other fellow candidates are achieving with their research.
