Our Locations
The University of Newcastle Department of Rural Health operates out of four major locations. In these locations we have dedicated academic and professional staff, as well as excellent teaching facilities and student accommodation to give students an outstanding rural experience. These centres are located at Armidale, Moree, Taree and Tamworth.

Tamworth
The Tamworth Region covers 9,653.25 square kilometres, with a population of over 58,000. From the Nandewar Range north of Barraba, to the head of the Peel River and the Great Dividing Range, Tamworth Region is one of the most progressive and exciting places in inland Australia. It combines country living with city style, history, sport and culture. The region is about three times the size of Sydney basin or the same area as Lake Eyre.
Tamworth is the major business centre of the North West and New England Region of NSW. The City of Tamworth covers 184 sq km and is home to over 50,000 people. It is widely known as the Country Music Capital of Australia, and attracts some 50,000 visitors every January to the festival. Throughout the year Tamworth thrives with cultural activities offering Art Galleries, Museums, a Conservatorium of Music, Libraries and the Capitol Theatre Tamworth. In 2008, Tamworth opened its doors to a $30 million world-class Australian Equine and Livestock Events Centre (AELEC) which now attracts some of Australia’s most action packed equine events.
Tamworth Rural Referral Hospital
Tamworth Rural Referral Hospital provides 265 beds with a 24 hour Emergency Department, high level Surgical and Medical services, including a Diagnostic Cardiac Catheterisation laboratory, Burns Unit, Rehabilitation services (including Brain Injury), a Diabetes Centre, Banksia Mental Health Unit, Renal services, Oncology, Radiology and Pathology. Tamworth Community Health Centre is located adjacent to the hospital, providing access to a range of community health services.

Well appointed, modern accommodation is within easy walking distance of the hospital or health service placement.
Taree
Taree is on the Mid North Coast of New South Wales, less than 4 hours north of Sydney, 2 hours north of Newcastle and 1 hour south of Port Macquarie. The Local Government Area of Greater Taree encompasses an area of 3,752 sq km and a population of approximately 48,000 residents.
Manning Rural Referral Hospital
Manning Rural Referral Hospital has specialist wards/units for Surgery, Day Surgery, General Medicine, Critical Care, Obstetrics, Paediatrics, Emergency Services, Oncology, Palliative Care, Rehabilitation, High Dependency and Mental Health. Departments include Radiology, Ultrasound, Physiotherapy, Pharmacy, Pathology, Occupational Therapy, Social Work, ECG and Discharge Planning. Co-located with the hospital is the Taree Community Health Centre, Public Dental Clinic, Mental Health Service and Drug and Alcohol Service..

Student accommodation is within easy walking distance of the hospital and town centre.
Armidale
High on the Northern Tablelands, Armidale is the most cosmopolitan NSW city outside Sydney catering for 25,000 citizens of 53 different nationalities. Armidale, with its unique blend of culture, state of the art technology, educational and natural beauty is a city offering diversity. Armidale is situated half way between Sydney and Brisbane and only two hours from the coast, it enjoys a warm summer, tones of amber during the autumn, a crisp winter and an exhilarating spring.
Armidale Hospital
Armidale Rural Referral Hospital provides for all types of medical services including medicine, surgery, obstetrics, paediatrics, geriatrics and accident and emergency as well as outpatient clinics. Ancillary services include radiology, pathology, occupational therapy and speech therapy, social work, physiotherapy and pharmacy.
Armidale Accommodation
Students in Armidale stay at Rusden House, which is a hostel type accommodation located about 200m from the hospital. The accommodation is owned and managed by HNEAHS. There is also accomodation for up to three students in a house located half a block from the hospital and University of Newcastle Department of Rural Health office.
Moree
Moree is located on the junction of two major highways, the Newell and Gwydir highways. It is approximately 600kms from Sydney, 500km from Newcastle and 480kms from Brisbane.. Moree is an agricultural service town, economically dependant on cotton, wheat and cereal crops, sheep and cattle grazing, Moree's town population is approximately 8500 people of which 18% are of Indigenous descent. (ABS 2001).
Moree District Hospital
Moree District Hospital provides acute medical, surgical and maternity inpatient services. Emergency Department, chemotherapy services and a range of diagnostic imaging (x-ray and ultrasound) and pathology services are available The Moree Plains Health Service also has Community Health Services, including support areas of Mental health, Drug and Alcohol, Early Childhood Centre, Aboriginal Maternal Health, Diabetes support, Physiotherapy, Audiology, Speech Therapy, Oral health, Domiciliary Nursing, Occupational Therapy and Dietetics.
Moree Accommodation
Accommodation is located within a 5 minute walk to the hospital and is also within close walking distance to the shops, medical centres and sporting facilities.
