Description
If you are an academic working in an Australian higher education institution and interested in developing your knowledge on the scholarship of teaching and learning and enrichening the learning experiences of students then the Graduate Certificate of Higher Education is the program for you. This bespoke program is designed for academic staff working in the higher education field, in Australia. This program will enable teaching staff employed in a higher education setting to develop teaching and learning activities targeted to their students using current scholarship of teaching and learning. The program provides theoretical and practical skills through a range of courses including understanding tertiary contexts, Quality Teaching, using ICT for teaching and learning and decision making, and the scholarship of teaching and learning including researched theoretical underpinnings.
This program is designed for academic staff of the University of Newcastle.
Program learning outcomes
On successful completion of the program students will have:
- Specialised knowledge of emerging technologies and their application to higher education teaching and learning contexts;
- Critical thinking and problem solving skills to support teaching and learning in higher education using the Quality Teaching Model;
- Ability to develop constructive teaching and learning strategies to support students in higher education through specialised knowledge of the scholarship of teaching and learning;
- Demonstrated depth of knowledge of educational research applied to higher education via a scholarly lens;
- Skills to critically reflect on a range of teaching, learning, and planning approaches to student learning in higher education, including administrative requirements of course coordination, lecturing, tutoring, and marking.

Admission information
Admission requirements
The Graduate Certificate in Higher Education is a 40-unit postgraduate qualification, with admission available to academic staff employed at the University of Newcastle who have one of the following qualifications or equivalent:
- Bachelor Honours Degree; or
- Bachelor Degree; or
- Diploma or Advanced Diploma plus two years' relevant work experience in any discipline; or
- At least five years’ demonstrable relevant work experience in any discipline.
Work experience can be demonstrated through: certified copies of all relevant qualifications, a detailed CV, and a statement of service or signed letters from employers confirming your role, duties and period of employment.
Academic staff should seek Head of School approval before applying for this program. Evidence of this approval should be supplied as part of your application.
English Language Requirements

Additional information
Through the Pathways and Academic Learning Support Centre, students can access a free suite of NUPrep preparation courses as well as Academic Learning Support.Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students can draw on the assistance and support provided by the Indigenous Student Support and Development service through the Wollotuka institute.
