Eastern University Games: Yasmin Meakes Touch Football
Did you know that there are over 400,000 registered Touch Football members, plus 500,000 children participating in school programs and related activities across the country? This places touch football right amongst the top of the participation rates for sports in Australia.
Touch Football is one of the sports that UON are competing in at the Eastern University Games (EUG) hosted at the University of Newcastle from July 6 to 10. With an uncharacteristic absence at last year's games in Wollongong, Newcastle's women's touch side will be hoping to revisit the form that claimed them the title in 2011. With a number of returning players from that side and some new players including Australian representative, Yasmin Meakes, it could make for an exciting showdown with Charles Sturt University, who are confident of claiming back-to-back wins.
OUR PLAYER TO WATCH
This year, Team UON will be bolstered by the addition of Yasmin Meakes, who is currently studying a Bachelor of Teaching / Bachelor PDHPE at UON. Yasmin is a keen touch footballer, playing in the Manly Women's Premier League Team. Competing in the Elite 8 competition with the NSW Scorpion Women's Team, Yasmin was thrilled when they took out the top spot. This led to her selection in the Australian Open's Mixed Team when her team beat New Zealand in Mudgee in April this year.
To see Yasmin in action, head to the Wallsend Touch Fields and help cheer on Team UON.
Competition Dates: Monday 7 to Thursday 10 July.
Location: Wallsend Touch Fields, Lewis Street.
