Project Design and Evaluation


The course will introduce students to designing projects, social programs and their evaluation. This will include some of the research activities, techniques and applications necessary for designing, implementing and appraising social programs.

Learning Outcomes

1. Assess the extent and severity of problems requiring social interventions

2. Design programs to ameliorate social problems

3. Assess the utility of new programs and initiatives;

4. Assess the merits of existing programs and attempts to improve them

5. Develop the ability to increase the effectiveness of program management and administration;

6. Satisfy accountability requirements of program sponsors

7. Maximise the use of evaluation results to improve programs

  4. Problems that projects are designed to solve
  5. Religion, ethics and aid work
  6. Market and non market solutions
  7. Mediating conflicts
  8. Government and NGO projects in action
  9. Planning and implementing project evaluation

Assessment Items

Online Learning Activity: Weekly contributions to online forum or participation in the discussion

Essay: Essay 1: Understanding project design

Essay: Essay 2: Design OR Evaluation of a project
