This course deepens students understanding of the principles and practices of teaching and learning Languages Other Than English (LOTE) and English as a Second Language (ESL) in secondary schools. Students will explore lesson planning and programming for Stage 6 LOTE and ESL English curricula; course and assessment requirements of the NSW Higher School Certificate for LOTE and ESL English; and issues and trends in teaching languages in schools. Specific attention will be given to the importance of cultural awareness in language teaching, and current developments and research into the teaching and learning of first, second and subsequent languages.

ObjectivesUpon completion of this course, students will have the capacity to:

* Develop lesson plans, programs and assessment tasks for Stage 6 LOTE and ESL English curricula.
* Use a range of strategies, technologies and resources for teaching and assessing Stage 6 LOTE and ESL English curricula.
* Interpret the course and assessment requirements of the NSW Higher School Certificate for Stage 6 LOTE and ESL English curricula.
* Discuss current issues and trends related to the teaching of Stage 6 languages in schools.
* Discuss current developments and research into the teaching and learning of first, second and subsequent languages.
* Appreciate the importance of cultural awareness in language teaching.

Case Scenario/PBL exercisesMinor Assignment = 20%: 1,000 words or equivalent; Consisting of an evaluation of student work samples from a Stage 6 LOTE or ESL English class. The student will be required to (a) assess and provide feedback on the work sample evaluated; and (b) design a series of three LOTE or ESL English lessons for a different topic, but that address the students needs as determined by the evaluation exercise conducted for part A of the assignment.
Presentations - IndividualMinor Assignment = 20%: 1,000 words or equivalent; Consisting of a seminar presentation on either (a) current issues and trends related to the teaching of languages in schools; (b) current developments and research into the teaching and learning of first, second and subsequent languages; or (c) cultural awareness issues in language teaching.
ProjectsMajor Assignment = 60%: 3,000 words or equivalent; Consisting of planning, programming, assessment, and resource building tasks linked to the requirements of the NSW Stage 6 LOTE or ESL English curricula. If qualifying for both LOTE and ESL, the student should produce an equivalent assignment for each area of specialisation.
