We're excited to offer Year 10 Students from Lambton High, Merewether High, and Hunter School of the Performing Arts the opportunity to visit our Callaghan Campus. You'll try out university study and enjoy an exciting day of immersive activities.


Experience what the university has to offer, with hands on activities and demonstrations across a range of subject areas. Familiarise yourself with our beautiful Callaghan Campus, and enjoy some live music while we cook you lunch!

You will be enrolled as a University of Newcastle student in one of our NUPrep courses. Take part in a workshop style class session to start the day, from there you will have the opportunity to finish the course online in your own time or back at school. If the course isn’t for you, then no worries – it's all free and you don’t need to complete it.

What is NUPrep?

Free short courses that you can complete in as little as one week!

NUPrep is designed to help you develop skills and knowledge all while giving you the experience of university study. This course will help build your understanding of what university study is like and boost your confidence in considering Higher Education once you finish high school. NUPrep courses are taught by discipline experts and are designed to be engaging and interactive. As a part of our Immersion program, you will do one session of face-to-face learning targeted specifically to high school students.

Once you have attended the Immersion Day, you will have until the end of Term 4 to complete the course online.

What do I get out of it?

At the conclusion of the course you will receive a digital badge, as well as record of the course on your University of Newcastle transcript. Plus, all the knowledge, skills and fun from the course and campus visit.

What courses are on offer?

Communication and access to information in education and the workplace is increasingly through digital technologies, that require specific skillsets. These skillsets will continue to be critical beyond the classroom, as students move into the professional world.

This course is designed to help students develop institutional, digital, information, and communication skills.

To develop digital literacy skills students will undertake:

  • activities to develop digital communication skills;
  • activities and exercises that develop information literacy skills;
  • analysis of a range of digital texts, including online journal articles, digital media and/or multi-media products;
  • discussion of online safety, cyber-security, digital footprints, and online reputations;
  • the production of digital media including; podcasts, videos and / or online presentation.

This preparation course is designed for students who have limited prior studies in chemistry.

The course is organised to present fundamental chemical concepts with particular emphasis on problem solving and is a skills based course.

The course covers:

  • scientific notation, measurement, SI units and unit conversions
  • atomic structure
  • use of chemical formulae
  • structure of elements and compounds
  • the periodic table and periodic trends
  • calculating chemical quantities using the mole
  • representation of chemical reactions using balanced chemical equations

This course provides foundational skills that will be highly beneficial to students who are interested in studying Chemistry in Year 11 and 12.

This preparation course is designed to introduce students to the ideas and concepts underpinning modern physics.

The course covers fundamental topics in Physics such as:

  • number and measurement
  • units and dimensions
  • motion in one dimension
  • vectors
  • motion in two dimensions
  • forces

This course provides foundational skills that will be highly beneficial to students who are interested in studying Physics in Year 11 and 12.

This course is designed for students who want to improve their written communication skills. The ability to plan a well-organised piece of work and to present it in a coherent and informative way is a critical skill for many HSC subject and tertiary study.

Students do not need to write and submit a full academic piece of writing during the course. Rather the course aims to provide the fundamental skills, knowledge and approaches that will give you a head start in developing your writing abilities.

The course covers essential steps in the writing process including:

  • interpreting the question
  • devising a reading plan
  • taking notes
  • organising your ideas
  • structuring an argument
  • the writing process (e.g. sentence construction, vocabulary selection, etc.)
  • using evidence and referencing sources
  • editing and polishing your work.

Foundation Mathematics is an introductory course for students interested in numeracy and algebraic skills.

The course covers:

  • types of numbers
  • arithmetic
  • operations with negative numbers
  • order of operations
  • fractions
  • decimals, rounding and scientific notation
  • basic algebra: algebraic operations, indices, solving equations
  • linear functions

This course provides foundational skills that will be highly beneficial to students who are interested in studying General or Advanced Mathematics in Year 11 and 12.

Application Information

As you will be a University of Newcastle Pathways student, you will need to apply and enrol with us.

Your school will let you know when to apply, but if you are here, then they probably already have!

  1. Select 'Apply Now' at the bottom of this page
  2. Fill out your details and select ‘Create Account’
  3. Select ‘Get Started’ at the bottom of the next page
  4. Complete your personal details
  5. Select ‘NUPrep Bridging and Refresher’ when asked ‘What do you want to study’
  6. Select ‘School Immersion Year 10’ as your stream
  7. Complete your application by uploading your identification documentation and submitting
  8. Your application will be processed within a few business days and you will receive an email advising you how to activate your student account and enrol
  9. Once you have activated your student account, you don’t need to enrol just yet. We will be visiting your school in Term 4 to help you enrol. If you missed the day to enrol at school, instructions can also be found here
  10. Your course content and announcements will be available through our Learning Management System (LMS) Canvas, If you cannot see your course/s on Canvas, check back in closer to your term start date.

Please note: Year 10 Immersion students are not required to provide the full 100 points of ID. Please disregard the application form requirements and simply upload a Medicare Card to meet the ID requirements to enrol in this course.
