Research Overview

Law For Nature Based Solutions: Designing Eco-Legal Systems for Ecosystem Based Adaptation in Coastal Zones

The aim of this thesis is to develop guidelines for designing ecological legal systems that can work towards the implementation of Ecosystem-Based Adaptation (EbA) in the coastal zone.

The coastal zone is often a crucial site for sustainable development while also being exposed to the risk of ecological emergencies.
The risk of ecological and human emergencies in the coastal zone is increasing under climate change.
Ecosystem-based Adaptation (EbA) has been identified as a potential strategy for achieving effective and ecologically sound adaptation to climate impacts. The novelty of this proposal is that the systems thinking will be used as a theoretical referential for supporting the idea of ecological law as an approach for designing legal systems that are able to support successful implementation of EbA initiatives in the coastal zone. Drawing togetherinsights from ecology, systems thinking and law, the thesis will develop theoretically informed guidelines to assess the capacity of existing coastal legal systems to implement EbA from the ecocentric perspective.
