Vines, Wine and Identity

Supported by the ARC Linkage Project scheme, this project focuses on Australia's oldest wine region, the Hunter Valley NSW, to understand how a product that 50 years ago was considered 'unAustralian' has become a lifeblood of some regions and a new national drink.

International Wine Studies Conference 2020

Wine studies in the humanities and social sciences engage cognate fields concerned with society, culture and place in the past and the present, and crosses several disciplinary boundaries. Yet little of this research traditionally emphasises the vitivinicultural sciences or scientists. This third international meeting of wine studies researchers is hosted at the University of California (Davis) in conjunction with that University’s Department of Viticulture and Enology. Presenters address questions about how, in the Anthropocene, we can pursue a more broadly interdisciplinary understanding of the wine industry and its role in society and culture.

New Tastes of Wine Symposium - Sustainable Consumption

Advances in technology, changes in policy, and consumers’ increasing interest and demand for healthier foods and beverages are driving innovations in wine. This symposium will discuss the history and meaning of wine as a health product, trends and changes in the wine market, product innovations, and consumer perceptions and demands in Australia.

International Wine Studies Conference 2018

Following on from the First International Conference in Wine Studies in London in 2016, Worlds in a Wine Glass, the Wine Studies Research Network is pleased to announce that a second meeting will be co-hosted in October 2018 in Bordeaux, France, in collaboration with TERESMA (Produits des terroirs, espaces et marchés) and Liquoreux d'Aquitaine, Universitè Bordeaux-Montaigne.

International Wine Studies Conference 2016

From the first Taste of Wine Studies research seminar convened by the University of Newcastle’s Wine Studies Research Network (WSRN) in 2013 through a second seminar in 2014, this annual meeting grew in 2015 to a day-long event titled A (Third) Taste of Wine Studies.

Vintage Stories

A radio documentary series co-produced by Julie McIntyre and Phillip McIntyre.

In 2008 Julie McIntyre received funding from the Australian Broadcasting Corporation’s Regional Development Fund to produce a radio documentary series on early New South Wales wine history. The research for the project occurred during Julie’s PhD at the University of Sydney. ABC Statewide New South Wales and 1233 ABC Newcastle broadcast the series in 2009. The 11 short episodes include histories of the earliest colonial experiments with winegrowing, the early colonial immigration of German-speaking, and influential families in the Hunter Valley and elsewhere.
