The Centre for the Study of Violence coordinated the inaugural History of Violence strand at the Australian Historical Association annual conference held at Flinders University, Adelaide in July 2024. The overall conference theme was “Home Truths”. There were six History of Violence sessions over three days, including two co-hosted with the Australian Women’s History Network.
"Home truths" include the continuing blight of domestic violence and child abuse, sexual violence not only on university campuses but in the wider community, the perpetuation of gendered and economic structures that facilitate or obscure violence, and the persistent presence of monuments, sometimes disfigured or otherwise transformed, but which continue to symbolise our violent colonial past.
In the last few decades, the history of violence has emerged as a subdiscipline as scholars have challenged existing narratives around violence as an historical agent. This Stream was offered as a way of facilitating collaborations and bringing together scholars within the sub-discipline.
