Biography

Dr Rajarathnam Dharmarajan (Raja) has over 22 years of experience since 1995 in multiple organizations including manufacturing sectors and internationally renowned academic institutions in Singapore and AustraliaThroughout these years he has held key multi-tasking and challenging positions. Most of his key performance indicators were through teaching & training technical modules, analytical lab planning, establishment and management, analytical method development, implementing QA/QC protocols for research & analytical labs, administrative tasks such as leaderships in safety committee and public relations committee. His teaching and training experiences are mainly through engineering and analytical science modules for undergraduate and graduate students at National University of Singapore, University of South Australia and currently in The University of Newcastle. Amidst these primary activities he has collaborated with several research projects of common interests which include: 

  • Synthesis & characterization of nano/thin films;
  • Development of nano-remediation materials;
  • Nano-materials characterizations;
  • Environmental remediation through nano materials/composites;
  • Screening & assessment of emerging & priority contaminants; and
  • Environmental analytical method developments for various types of contaminants

Thus, he has guided/helped several internal and external research projects since 2002 which includes UG and PhD/HDR students’ levels. He has involved in several international collaborations with various institutes in Singapore, India and Russia towards solving technical and analytical problems. All these resulted in good number of publications in peer reviewed international journals and conference papers/abstracts additionally. Besides he has also engaged in consultant works through CRC-CARE, Australia for several environmental remediation related projects. 

Raja is well experienced in the management of state-of-the-art chemical analytical labs, comprising cutting edge equipment for organic & inorganic analyses and materials/nanomaterials characterisations. He has significant experience in lab based research on the development, characterisation and applications of nanomaterials and in method development employing various organic and materials analytical tools. Thus he is well experienced in:

  • Post-run data analysis and spectral interpretations (IR, Raman, MS & NMR);
  • X-ray analytical post-run data analysis (XRD, XRF & XPS);
  • Analytical method development based on USEPA, NEPM, USP, BP, NF and ISO based guidelines; 
  • Implementation of Lab Quality Management Systems for QC labs (ISO9001 & TGA), analytical & testing labs (ISO17025) and synthesis/process labs (GLP compliance through OECD guidelines); and
  • Establishment of Lab Safety Management Systems for QC-, Analytical-, Teaching- and Research labs.

He lately is getting developed NATA SOPs and guidelines for the selected analytical methods to promote the quality and commercial values of the analytical labs at Global Centre for Environmental Remediation (GCER), UON.

He has strong ability towards the critical evaluation of scientific literature and experimental data which is simply reflected through by acting as reviewer for several international journals and is a reviewer panel member for RSC, UK. He is also acting as international examiner for PhD thesis evaluations for few Indian Universities.

In the present work, vertical ZnO nanorods (NRs) were grown onto ITO substrates by a simple two step chemical process at relatively low temperature by using successive ionic layer absorption and reaction method (SILAR) and chemical bath deposition (CBD) method. The investigated on n-ZnO/p-Polythiophene heterojunction device have been fabricated with ZnO nanorods. Structural analysis reveals that the grown ZnO NRs exhibit (002) reflection with higher intensity, indicating that the ZnO NRs grown in c-axis orientation. FESEM image shows the surface morphology of grown ZnO nanorods was of hexagonal wurtzite structure whose diameter varies from 200 nm to 1µm. Room temperature Photoluminescence exhibited strong UV emission at ~386 nm and a negligible green band confirms the presence of very low concentration of oxygen vacancies in the well-aligned ZnO nanorods. The current-voltage (I-V) characteristics of the heterojunctions show good rectifying diode characteristics. These results indicate that hybrid device fabricated from solution process is a promising approach for future light-emitting diodes (LEDs) devices. © (2010) Trans Tech Publications.
