Career Summary

Biography

Jordan Beavis is a PhD Candidate and Sessional Academic in History at the University of Newcastle. His research primarily focuses on the linkages the Australian Military Forces maintained with the other armies of the British Commonwealth in the interwar period (1919-1939). Such linkages comprised official schemes to maintain interoperability between the Commonwealth militaries, but also encompassed a wide variety of individual connections and experiences which remain understudied in existing historiography. Jordan's research requires extensive knowledge not only of Australian military history, but also of the histories of the other armies of the British Commonwealth, understanding of the societies and cultures from which they were raised, and insight into how the Commonwealth as a whole militarily prepared for a future war in the interwar period.

Jordan Beavis commenced his PhD Candidature in 2018 following the completion in 2017 of his Bachelor of Arts (Honours Class I) degree at the University of Newcastle. Jordan's 2017 Honours thesis won the 2018 C.E.W. Bean Prize, a prestigious award granted through the Australian Army History Unit. Since beginning his PhD project Jordan has also been awarded a series of competitive research grants to assist in the completion of his thesis, each of which indicate the viability and necessity of his original research. He is also a member of a number of scholarly societies such as the Society for Military History (SMH), the Australian Historical Association (AHA), and the Association for Canadian Studies in Australia and New Zealand (ACSANZ).
