© Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2020. Paenibacillus larvae is a Gram-positive spore forming bacterium and is the causative agent of American Foulbrood (AFB), a highly contagious infectious disease of Apis Mellifera (the European honey bee), which results in hive death and significant economic losses within the apiary industry world-wide. AFB is typically diagnosed by visual identification which is labour intensive and highly operator dependent. In the absence of a low cost, rapid and reliable industry surveillance tool targeting AFB, the disease has spread around the world. Real-time polymerase chain reaction (rtPCR) is a potential AFB surveillance tool with a demonstrated high sensitivity for the detection and quantification of Paenibacillus larvae infections in Apis Mellifera hives. Current techniques result in the disturbance of the internal hive microclimate by opening and deconstructing the hive. Our research aims to develop a new, non-invasive, rtPCR technique for the detection of AFB in beehives without the need to open the hive.

© Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2020. Healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) arise from exposure to infectious organisms within a healthcare setting, HAIs are a significant occupational risk for Medical Radiation Science (MRS) professionals which have a high degree of patient-contact. Methods: Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines were used in this research. The inclusion criteria were studies describing infectious organisms found directly in MRS departments or outlining a risk of infection to MRS professionals. Studies on infectious organisms on clothing or equipment used in these departments were also included. Results: Screening excluded 1655 articles that didn¿t meet the criteria, twenty-one articles were included in the final review. Preliminary findings, published between 1998 and 2018, were from eleven countries. Three studies were set in radiotherapy and thirteen in diagnostic radiography departments. No studies were published from nuclear medicine departments. Twenty different organisms were identified. Conclusion: Preliminary findings indicate a lack of related published studies within nuclear medicine departments.
